Finding Time to Play

I've been having a lot of fun lately learning new techniques and looking for new items and ideas to add to my shop. One thing I've been playing with is jewelry. So far I've just been making samples and keeping them for myself :)
~~~~~~
My challenge piece for the month of February was one of my first jewelry pieces...and it made me want to create more! I bought a few basic jewelry-making items like jump rings, chain and pliers and got my creative juices flowing.
This banner-style necklace was the next item I made. I thought it was fun and can be customized in so many ways! I've even thought of using hearts instead of triangle pendants.
I've seen other pieces similar to this made out of metal and stamped and I thought...why can't I make this out of wood! It took a few tries to get the circles the size I liked, but I love how it turned out! I thought I could make these in both a premade option as well as a made to order option.
And my next attempt is to make one out of colored acrylic!
I also made a pair of earrings to match one of my pendants. I like how the set looks together!
The only problem is, the jewelry category on Etsy is SO saturated! So I'm trying to decide if I should list these or sell them in sets or what. I'd love to take them to shows with me, but the friend I share a booth with makes jewelry, so I don't want to step on her toes too much either. But I sure am having fun coming up with new designs :)
  1. These are great! I really love the wood. So many possibilities!
  2. Gorgeous! I say if you enjoy it, keep making it. I know it's hard with so many jewelry sellers, but these pieces are unique. I find that so many jewelry sellers make really similar styles that if you make something unique, you can sell it.
  5. I love the way you stretch yourself, but remain true to your original medium at the same time.
  6. It's fun to see all the ideas that you come up with. Is that "2 circled" pendant a tree inside? You could customize that with a tree and then a person's last name! Anyway, I think that the jewelry definitely goes along with your other creations. Like me and my paper beads! Which reminds me... I was going to make some eyeglass holders! {:-D
  7. Love the earrings and pendant set! You're right about the saturation of the jewelry category, but maybe because yours are wood, they'll stand out more...? Good luck! :)
  9. I like the wood for jewelry -- I say go for it! How about the banner one with hearts and MOM for Mother's Day?
  10. You're definitely on to something! The fact that you can personalize I bet will be very popular. Isn't there an anniversary that's wood? Yes - 5! It would be a perfect 5th anniversary gift.. now how to get the news out to the guys!
  11. I already shared my thoughts on the BBA forum, but again, I really like your designs! I would see what's available on Etsy to see if you can have a little niche. I think that the customized options would do well. If the market for wooden jewelry is already really saturated, may be just list them around the holidays so people might pick them up when they're already shopping with you for ornaments and albums.
  12. I know the jewelry is saturated since I'm trying to sell it too but having a wooden version of metal choices might be a niche you could try.
  13. I agree with all the comments here! I know that the market is saturated, I closed my jewelry shop, but I don't think that there is really much choice in the wood category. I'd check for sure, but I say---GO FOR IT!
  14. Like other people have said, wood jewelry isn't as common of a product, so you've got that advantage right away! Plus--and I know this might be a controversial thing to say--I think that a category being saturated isn't necessarily a problem. As long as you know how to drive traffic to your shop, it doesn't really matter what the rest of Etsy is doing.
    Either way, this is awesome! I especially like the bunting necklace. So fun!
  15. These are unique. Even the triangle one, though not my style, is still really fun to look at and I bet others would think the same. And I like the circle within a circle pendant!!
  16. That necklace and jewelry set is so, so pretty. I'm sure that if you mull it over long enough you'll figure out what direction to go with your newest creations. It wouldn't hurt to try them in your shop and see how they do. I wish you much luck with your newest venture! :)
  17. I think your jewelry is fantastic! I think you sell it on Etsy, it's very unique and people will really respond to the fact that they can be personalized! Use good descriptive titles and tags emphasizing the personalized aspect, and you should have no problem being found in searches.
