My Lone Tomato

Operation Potted Tomato - Fail
This year, I thought I'd try to plant my tomatoes in containers. I'd see others do this and I thought it would be great to not have to weed them and Jesse wouldn't have to mow around them. I even found one at the store that was already potted and came with the cage already attached to the pot...score!

Well, I didn't take into account all the wind we have here in the country. I tried putting the pot in three different locations and every time I checked on it, it had blown over. The final straw was trying to put it on the front patio. I thought having a level surface would help it. Nope, it just had further to fall. And when it fell this time, it broke the base of the stem.

The plant did have one tomato already started on it. And even through all the wind and all the falls, this little tomato survived. I couldn't believe when I saw it had ripened this week!

Next year I think I'll stick with planting them in the ground...lol :)
How is your garden going this  year?

  1. Hurray for the one survivor :)
We're growing cherry tomatoes in containers. Nothing yet so far. We need sun!!

  2. I have not had good success with container gardening either Edi. But, I am trying it again this year with tomatoes, and even a squash. With all the rain we've been having, so far, so good. We'll see...

We also have two little garden beds going, which are doing well.

  3. The sole survivor! Our get munched by deer. We tried for several years but have given up.

  4. Your poor tomato plant, yay for the one survivor though! I tried hanging tomato plants one year, but the water seemed to drain out too quickly and they were always dry, they didn't do well at all.

  5. What garden?? LOL! At least that little tomato held on! It's a cutie!

  6. This is my first year even attempting a garden. It's interesting because I'm learning what the slugs will and won't eat - my begonias have been completely ravaged. I planted four different kinds of lettuce and they completely devoured just one plant but left the others alone. So far, my tomatoes are spindly little things with no tomatoes on them yet... so you're doing better than me! :)

  7. Oh no! That stinks. At least you got 1 tomato. Maybe putting a heavy rock in the bottom of the pot would keep it from blowing over. Hopefully next year works out for your tomato growing attempt! This learning experience will be helpful going forward. :)

  8. oooo....Edi! not fun!
Hooray for that one (albeit expensive) tomato! Here's to its successful struggle for survival!

  9. Awww! Poor little tomato. :) I did a whole post on container gardening yesterday! Did you put cages around them? That helps with wind. It's a pretty tomato!

  10. Survival of the fittest. That little tomato just hung on through all the wind and falls.

I put my tomatoes and green peppers in pots this year, but they are sheltered a bit on the deck. One green pepper is pretty droopy, but the tomatoes are growing--no tomatoes, yet, though.

The garden in the ground is doing better (although I need to weed it again). I've enjoyed fresh lettuce this week. And our raspberries are doing well. DH mowed over my sweet corn, but it is coming back. It wont be knee high by the 4th, though.

  11. We don't have any space to plant tomatoes so tried the pot thing but they didn't grow. With all your land, you should plant a HUGE garden!

  12. I guess 1 tomato is better than none! I've learned to take the smaller plants with the cage and plant them in bigger pots that are heavier. We've never had a problem with them in containers when they are heavy.

  13. Yay for the tomato!! I considered having some plants on my balcony but we don't get a lot of sun for them so I just have an aloe vera that seems to be thriving.

  14. Aw, at least you got one! I hope that the tomato planning goes better next year. No gardening around here... :)

  15. I've always wondered how those worked out. There really isn't anything better than a homegrown tomato!

And you have "a" homegrown tomato!

  16. Aww, poor little tomato plant. I container gardened when we rented, but have now moved on to raised beds. I love fresh homegrown tomatoes. Don't let this deter you from container gardening. Just use larger post with some stones in the bottom. That's what worked for us.

  17. My tomato story this year is a funny one. I wanted two plants, for my patio--I don't have to contend with the wind. I wanted a sun gold cherry tomato and an Early Girl. I got the Early Girl and then I reached into a flat--clearly labeled "Sungold". When I got home, the Sungold was not a Sungold, but another Early Girl! Apparently someone place the wrong plant in the tray. What is funny, is I did this, again, when I bought my peppers! I guess this will teach me to read the little label IN the plant!
