Supporting Local Artists

While Jesse and I were in Mexico back in December, our resort had a market set up with local artists and vendors out on the walkways around the beach and pools. Some things were obviously mass produced while others you could tell were handmade. I knew I wanted to buy something handmade to bring home with us.

We walked about half way through the market and stopped at one table in particular. A man was hand painting his work right there at the market. He didn't haggle us or try to get us to barter with him. He told us his prices and went back to his work. After being haggled at every other booth, it was nice to stop and watch this man work. He painted every painting with his fingers and finger nails!

I knew right away one of his paintings was coming home with us. The hard part was deciding which one. After much debate, we decided on the one that most represented our trip. I will most remember the blues and greens in the ocean, the palm trees and the white sandy beaches. I think this painting shows that well :)

It is pretty common tradition in Mexico to barter with the vendors and haggle them down to the lowest price. In fact, they expect it. But I couldn't bring myself to do it for this piece of artwork. Being an artist myself, I know how much love and work goes into each piece. How could I haggle on something like that? So I paid his asking price and walked away with a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that will forever remind me of our trip to Cancun :)

My only regret...not getting a picture of him while he painted!

Almost Wordless Wednesday - Keep an Eye Out!

We had to keep an eye out for these little guys while we were in Mexico...Jesse's sister-in-law had one in her dress while we were getting ready for the wedding!

Friday Features - Dolphins

Today's features are inspired by my awesome Swim with the Dolphins that I blogged about yesterday. I looked for something special while in Mexico to remember our experience by, but couldn't find the right item. So when I got home, I started searching Etsy and found these lovely items that remind me of our trip and our swim.

Swimming with the Dolphins

One of the highlights from our trip to Mexico back in December was swimming with the dolphins. This is something I've always wanted to do and I was SO excited when I found out it was offered at our resort! There were 8 of us that participated and we all got to go together.

I was so amazed at how smart the dolphins are. They learn by hand signals, so we were told to do certain things with our hands and the dolphin would act accordingly. Here are two examples of the dolphin following different hand signals. The dolphin knows to touch your hand(s), so where ever you have them, the dolphin will go. When I had one hand out, it reached up with its nose. And with two hands out, it reached up with its fins.

And when you cup your hands, the dolphin knows you want a kiss :) I was able to get a kiss from the dolphin and give it a kiss in return...too cute!
This was called "the clock" and the dolphin would put its nose in your hand and spin you around. Don't you love Jesse acting like a ballerina :)

The best part was getting to ride the dolphin! We swam out into the ocean (which was sectioned off) and the dolphin would swim to us and then flip over when it saw our hand. We just grabbed on and went for a ride.

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend swimming with the dolphins. They are such amazing creatures and this was an amazing time!

Catching Up

I'm back from my blogging break and ready for 2013! But where do I start? So much has happened since I took my break that it's been hard to catch back up.

I guess I'll just start from the beginning...it's the most fun anyway :) One of the main reasons I had to shut down my shop early and decided to take my bloggy break to begin with is because Jesse and I went to Mexico!!! His cousin got married and we were invited to go along! There were 14 of us total in the group and we had an amazing time. We stayed at Moon Palace in Cancun and I would recommend this resort to anyone traveling to Mexico. All inclusive and well worth the expense!

It was rather windy the day of the wedding, but it was beautiful nonetheless! Here is a picture of the happy couple and one of Jesse and I the day of the wedding as well.

Something else we did while on vacation is swim with the dolphins. This was my number one thing I wanted to do while in Mexico. And it was all I hoped it would be. Here's one picture from our swim, but I think I'll save the rest of another post :)

We got back really late on December 23rd and didn't get to bed until 2:30am on Christmas Eve! We went to my grandparent's at noon that day and then to Jesse's mom's that night. Then we went to Jesse's dad's at noon on Christmas Day. We were rather tired by the time all the festivities were through...to say the least!

And to top things off....my nice camera got ruined while we were in Mexico due to the extremely high humidity the first day we were there. Luckily I had my waterproof camera as well and still got some pictures. Then when we got home, the media card in my desktop computer went out, so I had to get it repaired and try to run everything off my laptop in the mean time! Ai yi yi!

The best part of my time off was that I got to spend lots of time with my parents! They were here over the holidays and just left on New Years Day. I did put my mom to work a few days :) But mostly we just watched movies, went out to eat or played cards...time together.

It was nice to have such a long break, but I'm ready to get back into my routine and get back to work! I have so many new ideas for the new year and I'm excited to get started!
Wishing everyone the best in 2013!!!

We finally got signed up for our passports on Monday, so I've been on the lookout for a cute passport cover to go along with it :)

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Every year when Cinco de Mayo rolls around, it sends my mind back to my trip to Mexico :)
In 2000 a group of students took a trip to Merida and lived with families! We then got to spend a day in Acumal and enjoy the beach :) We got to see so much and learn so much while we were there! I took hundreds of pictures and scrapbooked tons of layouts...I probably should have just done a mini album for the trip!
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I thought I'd share a couple of my layouts with you :)
Now keep in mind that I made these back in 2000. You can definitely see how far my scrapbooking has come in those 9 years!
It's always fun to look back on those old layouts. It doesn't really matter how corny they look with stickers just stuck all over the page and writing all over the place. What matters are the memories...that's what scrapbooking is all about after all :) Enjoy the layouts!
