My favorite thing about fall is the changing colors of the leaves. And I've noticed more red trees this year, which makes everything look even more beautiful! That's why for this month's BBA Challenge, I came up with the idea to use these fall colors to create art.
I was lucky enough to be asked by Sharla of BeadedTail to make her a wooden leaf wall hanging. She sent me scanned photos of leaves from her front yard. From there I created files to cut the exact shape of the leaf out of wood with my laser.
The funny thing about this whole process is me having to ask Sharla what size she wanted these made. I told her the scans must have come through really large because the leaves were over 9" tall! She just laughed and told me that was the actual size of the leaf! Our leaves seem so tiny here in Iowa!
After I cut the leaf photo and the wooden leaf with the laser, I glued the two together and added a sealant to preserve them. So far I have one done and I'm working on two more for her to hang on her walls and enjoy the fall colors all year.
What's your favorite thing about fall? Do you have 9" leaves in your part of the country?
I love the wooden leaf. I think a smaller leaf would make a great christmas ornament!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a pretty wooden leaf and it's amazing you cut that from a scan! The leaves in Sharla's neck of the woods sure are large :)
ReplyDeleteWhat great ideas from both of you! Love the way the leaf turned out!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool!!! I didn't realize you can just scan images and cut it out of wood. Super cool.
ReplyDeleteHow cool! I have actually seen leaves that are almost a foot long in forest preserves outside of the city here. But usually they're much smaller!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, we don't get too many 9" leaves here! There are some maples that get pretty big, but that's about it. Like Melissa said, most of them are pretty small!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, so precious, and it came out beautifully! What a great keepsake!
ReplyDeleteWow, 9 inch leaves!!! I didn't know she was in Texas. =p
ReplyDeleteCool project.
I, too, love the changing color of the leaves. In Southwest Oklahoma, we have yellow and brown leaves; not too many red. That's what was so great about my trip to NY this month! Great idea - sounds like a plan for the future! {:-D
ReplyDeleteps - love the leaf!
This is such a cool custom order! I know that Sharla is going to enjoy her beautiful new hanging.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! Awesome leaves!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I had just showed my mom the leaf you made me and told her how you thought our Oregon leaves were so huge! I just thought they were normal until you pointed out that they are on steroids! Anyway, I do love the leaf and will enjoy them all year round now!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea--I can see all kinds of possibilities in the future with this technique!

ReplyDeleteLove your wood designs. You go girl
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonder with your laser Edi! it amazes me the cool stuff you make! I bet Sharla will love these leaves!!
ReplyDeleteWow - what fun! LOL - it's a lot bigger than our Cottonwood leaves!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any 9 inch leaves around here, but we do have a lot of bright red trees this year, and I'm just loving it!
ReplyDeleteWow! 9 inches! That is huge. We do have bigger leaves in New England but I don't know about that large. The cut leaf came out so beautiful. It seems like everyone was able to enjoy a vibrant fall this year. I guess the weather was just right to create these rich reds.
ReplyDeletewow! very cool! I hope we get to see the completed project.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! The leaf cut turned out really well. I, too, am surprised at the size of the leaf.
